First I must ask you what kinda ride do you have? Year/Make/Model?

That will help narrow the search considerably.

thats a good question ......... on my 85 350x I boght a new bottom end on e-bay and they said 85/86 I understand that the only real diffrance is the routing of the clutch cable but whitch #'s go to whitch years

Dload the 350X microfiche parts list.

On the second page it explains what the serial numbers represent. In the middle of the serial number there is a number that tells you the bike's year.

Hope this helps.

Keep us posted.

the frame # was easy but trying to read the engine # is for the birds ........ on the third page it gives us a range of serial #'s for each year ......... % wise the engine that I pirchased and mychassi were acceptably built at the same time ........ I hope that makes since to you

well i ride a 1986 trx 250r that i have a 350x conversion done to. now the first 350x engine the clutch cable did go a different way this this one i put on. I was told this one was a 1985 when i bought it. and the reason i need to know is im getting a goki electric start cause my knee is bad, and for some reason the 85 will only work on a 85 and 86 will only work on 86 different part numbers for goki, and i called a parts dealer and couldnt get a answer of what was different (they didnt know)

i really have no clue, the only difference i see it the mounting and way the clutch cable is routed.

I figure that its like GM they got like 10 differant P/N's for the same darn part to make their inventory look larger or something

There is indeed a difference between the two years other then the clutch cable. I accidentally figured it out today when I pulled my left side cover off to change my shifter shaft seal. Its hard to explain but in 86 they changed the way the oil flows by removing part of the casting in the cover. The only reason why I noticed is because part of my gasket didn't match the inside of the cover in one spot but it did match the crankcase side. Yes I have a cover off of an 86 on an 85 engine. I was worried at first but when I studied the parts fiche and if I'm reading it correctly the cover for the 86 is interchangeable with the 85 engine but the 85 cover is NOT interchangeable with the 86 engine. So I think I'm OK. So for those of you thinking about that electric start make sure you know what year engine you have.

Here are a couple pictures of what I am talking about. If anyone else has any other theories on this please let me know.

I think the stator set-ups might be different on the 85 and 86's also.
