The trick to kicking it without the cable is to make sure it is at TDC before you start kicking. I haven't had one for some time and if you start the kick in the middle of the stroke it will fire off and send the force up your @$$. They don't put decompression cables on a Harley. I plan to replace it but I haven't had any problems with out it yet.

The cable on my brothers bike is there but when you kick it down, right when the kick start moves the cable does not move... So it don't work but runs good. just a little more harder to fire up.

Are you starting the kick stroke from TDC ? Inside the side cover the kicker has a cam om its shaft. this cam needs to be located corectly to alow for it to pull on the cable. I put mine together the first tome 2 years ago and had it misaligned. The cable didn't engage till the kicker was a quarter the way down. It needs to be all sincrenized correctly to work well. If it don't move when you start from the top, I would concider pulling the clutch cover to ensure that the dots are in alignment.
on the cam on the kicker shaft.
